Manchester Central Fire Cadets - experience cadet rIde out
Fire cadets experience many different types of activities during their time as part of the scheme, one experience that the cadets from Manchester Central Fire Station experienced recently was a cadet ride out.
On Saturday 22nd June 2013 eight of the cadets who are about to start the second year of the scheme completed a shift at the fire station from 1600- midnight.
During the shift the cadets experienced what it was like to work on a Fire Station and completed various key activities, they completed prevention work around the Crumpsall and Harpurhey areas of Manchester this involved talking to members of the community about fire safety, offering Home Safety Checks including the fitting of free smoke alarms where required.
They also completed some training on the drill yard where they pitched ladders and they run out lengths of hose all very similar to the training completed by Firefighters, all of the activity completed so far has two key skills that the cadet scheme bring out in young people, Communication and Team Work both are very essential to completing any task within the Fire Service and the cadets demonstrate this very well.
In addition to the cadets completing the above duties they also had the added experience of attending incidents within the Greater Manchester area that the service may have been required to attend.... On this particular night the cadets unfortunately did not attend any incidents, this was due to their being no real incidents to attend during this time period.. Although unfortunate for the cadets as it would have been great for them to see all that training we do and the skills they have learnt and how we put this into practice during an incident. On the plus side the lack of incidents demonstrates that the work completed by the service to prevent the incidents from occurring is definitely working, everyday more and more members of the community request Home Safety checks which not only give you valuable Fire Safety advice, is is also a free service!!! :-)
By the end of the shift the cadets had experienced all that happens on a Fire Station and also had given them a very good insight into all the roles played in Prevention, Protection and Response within Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue.

Welcome all to Manchester Cadets
Greetings!!
Welcome to the new Fire Cadets blog currently being completed within the Manchester area.
The Fire cadets have been with Greater Manchester Fire Service for a good few years though within Manchester they are a new unit.
At the moment we currently have two schemes within Manchester these units work out of Manchester Central and Wythenshawe Fire Stations.
The cadets attend each scheme once a week for a few hours where they will learn Practical and theoretical aspects of the Fire Service, they also take part in numerous community events so far this year the cadets have attended the St Georges Day Parade, Manchester Day Parade and took part in fund raising initiatives for the Fire fighter's Charity and Operation Florian.
One of the good things about the cadets is...... its free!!!
